Further training

Pedagogical work with picture books is essential for both children's linguistic and social development. To identify the perfect picture books among the numerous new releases that are truly effective for use in daycare groups or elementary schools, a team of experts in Wetzlar reads through almost all new releases on the picture book market, paying particular attention to the educational potential of the titles. In addition to the criteria of linguistic and visual aesthetic quality, particular attention is paid to the following questions:
- Do the picture books encourage reflection on social interaction? Are they suitable for fostering empathy? (Acquisition of social skills through picture books)
- Do the books offer enough space for individual thoughts, do they encourage storytelling and discussion in the group? (Vocabulary work/language development)
- Do the picture books' characters inspire role-playing, thus helping to see the world through different eyes?
- Do the picture books' content fit the topics and projects in the daycare or elementary school, and are they suitable for initiating or supporting a project? (Educational ideas and resources)

During the lecture, around 30 picture books will be presented to daycare and elementary school teachers, as well as interested parents. Afterwards, they will also have the opportunity to receive targeted advice on specific (perhaps difficult) topics and to exchange experiences with each other in using picture books.
The event is part of the annual Picture Book Festival of the City of Giessen and the Giessen Literary Center.
